One year ago Ethiopia's prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, was in Oslo to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for making peace with Eritrea. Today he is facing a civil war within his country. In early November Abiy stated that the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) had attacked a national military base and the regime responded by sending troops to the northern region. Why is the conflict between the regime and TPLF escalating now? And what does the escalation mean for the people living in Tigray? What will happen if there is no peaceful solution to the conflict between the government and the TPLF?

The ongoing conflict has resulted in thousands of people fleeing over the border into Sudan. Sudan itself is going through a fragile transition after the revolution in late 2018 and the country is in the midst of an economic crisis. If the conflict escalates further in Tigray and the rest of the country, many fear that it could destabilize the whole of the Horn of Africa. What would be the regional implications of a war in Ethiopia and how is the continental and international community responding? What are the measures that need to take place for a peaceful solution to the conflict?
